Summer Term – The Great Fire of London

This term, we will be learning about the Great Fire of London. The children will know where, when and how the fire started and the impact it had on London at the time and for the future. We will learn about the buildings and lifestyle in the 17th Century and some significant people from the time.

During the second half term, the children will be expanding their knowledge of the seven continents and five oceans by learning about a non-European country in more detail. They will understand where it is in the world and compare it to the United Kingdom. We will name key physical features and use maps and aerial photographs when comparing.

In English the children will be using the books: Toby and the Great Fire of London and Vlad and the Great Fire of London to inspire their writing of a newspaper report, a narrative and a non-chronological report.

In Art, we will be creating observational drawings of feathers using a variety of medium and mark making leading to manipulating paper to make 3D structures of birds using different artists’ work as inspiration. DT will be linked to our Great Fire of London topic where we will be looking at and building Tudor style houses.

For our RE lessons, the class will be considering what makes stories so important to different people and reflecting on human relationships to God through art.

Summer term sees the children looking at Plants and learning how seeds and bulbs grow and what plants need in order to grow and stay healthy. The children will be designing their own investigation and observing their results over the term.

PE will be taught on a Wednesday and Friday. Both units will be taught outside so please ensure your child has the correct PE kit at all times and that they have appropriate, plain trainers that fit.

Homework will continue to be set on a Friday – this will be Spellings and Maths. Please remind your child to complete each set piece as it helps consolidate work done in class and sets up good habits for learning. In addition to the work on Spelling/Maths Shed, the children should be reading at home at least 3 or 4 times a week. They will also be some Learning Log activities set over this term.

I look forward to a fun-filled Summer term.

Thank you for your continued support.
