Physical Education at Cuddington and Dinton

Intent

At Cuddington and Dinton C of E, we provide a high-quality physical education to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health.  We create a culture which inspires active generations to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve. We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities, essential in supporting their physical, emotional, social and moral development.  Our children have opportunities to compete in sport and other physical activities that build character and help to embed the school values. We provide opportunities for children to learn how to swim with lessons in year 2 and 3 with catch up lessons for all key stage 2 children that cannot swim 25ms.

We aspire for children to adopt a positive mind-set and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience.  Our curriculum and opportunities for sport outside of the curriculum, aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.  Providing our children with the skills and knowledge to achieve future success in their next steps.

Implementation

At Cuddington and Dinton C of E School, we have adopted the Complete PE scheme to teach our PE across the school. This scheme ensures that children are given a wealth of opportunities to develop their physical movement skills as well as achieving whole child objectives, cognitive, physical, social and wellbeing.

In Foundation the children will experiment moving in different ways, moving confidently and concentrating on any instructions.  They will develop life skills such as fairness, while playing by the rules of the game and empathy when they need to encourage others. Children will start to explore honesty, as they learn to keep the score and self-belief, understanding why it is important to try our hardest.

In KS1 and KS2 children have at least 2 hours of quality PE sessions a week following the prescribed Complete PE plans.
In a PE session you will see:

  • Consistency in routines including an introduction and warm up, skill development and plenary
  • Collaboration and opportunity for partner discussion
  • Opportunities for children to work independently and together
  • Opportunity for children to perform and feedback
  • Subject specific vocabulary that builds on previous learning/year groups
  • Progression in equipment used with year groups
  • Classes follow the PE overview to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports
  • Participation in a variety of competitive sports
  • Swimming lessons in Year 2, 3 and those who have not met the 25m requirement by the summer term (y3) will attend lessons again

We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. Sports clubs are offered to all children in Foundation, KS1 and KS2.

Meeting the needs of identified groups such as: SEND, EAL, disadvantaged children and the most able pupils are met by following the lesson plans from Complete PE that clearly include provision for higher attaining children and lower attaining children. Lesson plans are adapted by teachers to show the provision for SEND pupils as needed.

PE lessons provide children with regular opportunities to develop their vocabulary with links to science and the body. With each new topic children are taught new vocabulary which builds year on year.

Impact

Our curriculum is designed so that children are taught a variety of activities and skills throughout their key stage and there is a progression journey through all of these. Each area of PE also has a progression ladder which shows progression from EYFS to Year 6.

Children also deepen their understanding of PE, year on year, by being introduced to specific vocabulary which is also mapped on a knowledge organiser document for each area.

Children have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities and demonstrate their new skills in intra and inter sports competitions. All children also have the opportunity in the summer term to take part in a sports day.

Children will become confident within the different strands of PE and show resilience when tackling new skills.   Children will develop life skills such as respect and communication as they collaborate with others, including their opponents, and will apply their skills while developing confidence as they grow in their ability to show resilience and self-motivation.
