Spring Term – Dinton Through Time

Dear Year 5 parents and children,

The Spring term focuses on the local area, exploring what the school’s logbooks tell us about what life was like in Dinton during the late 19th and early 20th century.

We will be creating mixed media landscapes in Art and creating Easter related food in Design and Technology. Within Geography, we will be walking the children to Eythrope for a river survey, testing the PH levels of the water and exploring the ecosystem around the river.

As part of a culture of exploring worldviews and beliefs, years 5 and 6 have the fantastic opportunity to take part in the Bedfordshire Faith tour, where the children visit a Sikhi Gurdwara, a Muslim Mosque and a Christian church in one day.

English

During English, the children will start by learning how to write a balanced argument by discussing topics such as screen time. Then they will begin their travels to the ghostly Thornhill to a lighthouse off coastal Devon, finally crashlanding in the Amazonian Rainforest.

Maths

This term we will be learning about fractions, multiplication and division, decimals and percentages, perimeter and area and statistics. The children will have a weekly arithmetic test in which to practise their methods of calculation regularly. We find that completing the arithmetic weekly helps children to understand the methods and consolidate their memory, ultimately helping them to feel more confident about maths.

Throughout all topics, we will use a mixture of concrete, visual and written methods to help the children understand key concepts. We aim to deepen understanding by presenting the areas of maths in different ways and revisit these throughout the year to consolidate the children’s learning and understanding.

Science and RE

In science, we will learn about materials in the first half term, and in the second half term, our topic will be ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’.

In RE, our topics are: ‘How does what we believe influence the way we should treat the world?’ and ‘How did Christianity begin?’.

Additional information about all curriculum areas is in our long-term overview.

Homework

Homework will be weekly spellings, a maths task and reading and at various points in the year, a specific one-off Learning Log homework linked to an annual or national event such as World Book Day. It is important that all children complete the homework. Please email me, through the office, if your child is experiencing any particular difficulties with the completion of the homework.

PE

This term, PE lessons will take place on a Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has warm layers for outside sports. Please remind your child to include spare socks so that they have something to change into if their socks happen to get wet or if they are wearing tights.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Holdford
