Summer Term – Mountain High, Valley Low

Dear Year 5 Parents and children,

Our focus this term will be Geography: investigating mountains around the world and completing a local river survey through Geography fieldwork.

In Art, we will be exploring the style and techniques of the Japanese artist Hokusai. We will focus on printing skills and plan to create our own Hokusai inspired prints looking at how the artist incorporates water and mountains into his work.

Taking inspiration from cuisine around the world, we will be inspired to create a variety of delicious dishes as part of our Design and Technology project.

Everest by Sangma Francis and Lisk Feng will inspire our writing of non-chronological reports while we will also be exploring and re-interpreting Japanese traditional Tales for the 21st century. We are continuing to read Boy at the back of the class as our class book. Please keep encouraging your child to read quality texts at home and bring in book recommendations for us all.

PE will be on Wednesdays and Fridays for the first half-term. Returning to Monday and Friday after the May half-term. We are delighted that Chance to Shine (a national cricket charity) will be providing cricket lessons as part of our PE lessons this half term.  They aim to give all children the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket.

In Science, the children will be studying Animals, including humans before moving on to the Year 5 Relationships and PSHE curriculum. The children will be studying the changes that happen during puberty and using the correct scientific terminology as well as exploring the changes that childhood and old age bring.

In RE, we are continuing looking at a Christian view of God as holy and loving and then will be moving onto what is means to live in a Muslim community in Britain, thinking especially about how Mosques inspire community.

The children will be exploring Dancing in the Streets by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, developing their own melodies and exploring the music of Motown.

Spelling will continue to be set on a Friday for a test at the end of each half-term. Please encourage your child to learn their weekly spellings. The half-termly overview will be available on the school website.

Please keep rehearsing times table knowledge in order to help your child rapidly recall this vital information for a variety of mathematical contexts.

Please remind your child to bring their water bottle and sun hat in daily.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Reed and Miss Kelly
