We will be having shorter learning sessions for this first half term, interspersed with movement breaks and mindfulness and mental wellbeing activities. The emphasis will be on settling the children back into their school routine, helping them adapt to changes and to recognise and manage emotions as well as to make and re-establish friendships.
Year 3 will need to bring their PE kit in on Monday and it will be sent home on Friday. PE lessons will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday and will be taught by our Sports coach, Mr Messenger. There will be no swimming this term.
Homework will be set on a Thursday and is to be completed by the following Wednesday. There will be a 2-week rota comprising a Learning Log activity in week 1 followed by My Maths in week 2 and so on. This means that we can ‘quarantine’ the Learning Logs for 72 hours before we look at them and then send them home again. The children who have moved to Year 3 from the Infant site should have a record of their My Maths password but please let me know if you need a reminder. Our new class members will receive a letter with password details.
Reading books can be changed on a Tuesday and Friday. We will not be using Reading Records this term, but we would be grateful if you would try and read with your child as much as possible. This continues to be extremely important and will support all aspects of their learning. When the reading books come back into school, they will be ‘quarantined’ before they are put back into the system. The children will be selecting books from baskets in the classroom rather than going to the library. We will not be able to run the school library this term however, in Year 3, we have a class library of books that will supplement the children’s banded reading books. These books will be for use in the Year 3 classroom only.
There is a daily Guided Reading slot in the timetable. Sessions will include individual reading, 1-1 reading with the teacher or class teaching assistant, group reading and discussion sessions, whole class reading and comprehension activities.
We will be not be using Spelling folders this term. The weekly spellings will be posted onto the Year 3 page on the website on a Friday. The children will have a week to practise the spellings at home and will be tested on the following Friday. Spelling tests will be carried out in a book in school. We will not be in a position to send home a record of their score each week, although of course, your child should be able to tell you. I have spoken to the children about the different ways they can practise their spellings and there is a document on the class page with lots of ideas. Please encourage them to put the words into sentences so that they begin to understand definitions and context. This should aid long term recall of the spelling.
Initially, there will be three spelling groups. Please look at the sticker inside your child’s Learning Log to determine which group they are in. The children have been grouped to give each individual the opportunity to cement the learning of Year 1 and 2 words or to move on with the Year 3 spelling rules as appropriate. I will continue to monitor the children’s progress and amend the groups as appropriate.
The Big One
The children may begin to talk about ‘The Big One’. This is a times table activity that we will carry out every week. The children will be given a grid to complete within a given time. It is presented as a fun task where each individual tries to improve their score week on week. All children will start on Big One number 1 and will move through the levels at their own speed. Where necessary, the children will be supported to enable them to access this task. Historically, the children absolutely love The Big One.
Music will be taught by the Year 4 teacher, Mr Mackriell and the children will be taught Science by Mrs Forster. With the exception of PE, all other subjects will be taught by Mrs Chaplin. The class teaching assistant is Mrs Clements.
