Summer Term – Once Upon a Time and Explorer, Explorer

Welcome back!  The first half of the Summer Term will be a topic focused on stories, called ‘Once Upon a Time…’ We will explore familiar, traditional fairy tales such as ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We will be describing the characters and settings and will create some maps of the journeys through the stories. We will look at and create alternative versions of the stories. We will be having Drawing Club sessions in the mornings and will continue to introduce six new words to the children each week. Please look at the weekly updates on Tapestry to find out the new vocabulary for each week. We will be building a love for reading and storytelling, by bringing the characters alive and creating our own character descriptions. We will be exploring growing and will be planting seeds and learning how to take care of the plants that we grow.  We will also be looking at materials when we read the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and creating our own sturdy structures from recyclable materials. We will end our topic with the story ‘The Tiger that came to tea’. We will prepare some food for our own little tea party.
During the last half of the Summer Term, our topic will be called ‘Explorer, Explorer’. This topic will cover a range of learning from exploring minibeasts, comparing hot and cold climates and thinking about castles, kings and queens.
In maths we will be consolidating our understanding of mastery of numbers to ten, before moving on to numbers beyond ten to develop a secure understanding of our base ten system.  We will be looking at patterns in number and problem solving. This will involve using concrete materials to explore grouping, sharing and using our understanding of addition and subtraction.
In phonics we will finish revising our Phase 3 sounds before moving on to Phase 4 where we will be reading and writing words with adjacent consonants.
PE will continue to be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons- please ensure all PE kit is in the PE bags. We will be doing PE outside more so the children will need trainers. Book change and library will continue to happen on a Friday morning.

Early Years Foundation Stage Aims

At Cuddington and Dinton C of E School, our aim within the Early Years Foundation Stage is to nurture the well-being, learning and development of all our children and empower them to shine as individuals. We provide a happy, safe and stimulating environment, which allows all children to feel secure and valued. We provide a supportive and secure environment in which every child can flourish and learn at their own pace, in their own individual way, through adult directed and child-initiated activities.

Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Intent

Children in our Early Years phase follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, which consists of seven areas of learning. Our curriculum enables every child to have access to a broad, balanced and engaging learning experience, through a variety of opportunities and experiences, which prepares them now and for the future schooling. Following personal interests and individual needs, allows us to plan and provide opportunities throughout our early years’ curriculum to support learning and development and help children achieve their next steps.

At the end of our Foundation stage we have 5 key aims that all children will learn and develop to ensure that they become effective learners throughout their time at Cuddington and Dinton School.

  1. To become safe and considered risk takers. Children will be able to challenge themselves physically and mentally.
  2. To become able communicators. Children will develop their ability to take turns, share and communicate themselves positively with others.
  3. To become confident readers. To confidently blend and segment words and use a rich vocabulary.
  4. To become confident at using a computer. Children will begin to use a desktop confidently in order to access key software such as Microsoft Word.
  5. To become active learners. Children will develop their growth mind set and believe in themselves. They will understand that it is okay if things go wrong.
