Homework Help

At Cuddington and Dinton School we believe the true value of homework lies in the process and discipline of planning and presenting a task independently and on time.

Our weekly homework tasks are set using the Learning Log model where children are given a focus relevant to their learning at the time but then have the creative freedom to choose what they do and how they present it. We have increasing expectations for each year group regarding the quantity, quality and depth of what the children produce but this is rooted in the children’s own interests and enthusiasm for their learning.

When the homework is given, the class with take time to discuss the focus and have the opportunity to make notes; suggestions might also be made as to the direction or ideas the children could pursue. We always encourage the children to challenge themselves by trying different medium and presentation techniques, to complete the homework as independently as possible and to demonstrate their understanding of the focus – this may support learning already taking place in school or in preparation for a forthcoming topic.

Other skills-based activities may be set when appropriate to the learning in school but resources and guidance is provided and these work in parallel with ongoing reading, spelling and mental maths practise.

Need inspiration? How about:

  • making a poster
  • drawing or painting an illustration or diagram
  • making a model in Lego, or clay or even Minecraft
  • writing a story, script or newspaper article
  • making a short video or film
  • making an information booklet
  • inventing a game or writing a quiz
  • taking photographs
  • cooking or baking
  • creating a slideshow
  • going on a visit
  • interviewing a friend or relative
  • linking to a hobby or something happening at home
We realise that the Learning Log model of homework makes it tricker to demonstrate maths skills and understanding and so, alongside the main weekly task, we use MyMaths to provide relevant maths activities online. The children will each be provided with school access and a personal username so they can complete tasks specifically chosen for them and the current maths topic. Children who are unable to access this provision at home are welcome to use the computers in school to complete these tasks. Click here to access the MyMaths portal.
